i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in New Zealand
i-Sites are tourist information centres found all over New Zealand in an official network of over 80 in the major towns and tourist hotspots.
Established by what is now Tourism New Zealand back in 1990, i-Sites are privately owned and operate on a franchise system.
They offer masses of maps, brochures and bus timetables etc along with a mine of local information on what's on and where to go. Both local and long-distance buses often leave from outside the centres. Many i-Sites now provide free WiFi, too. Most also have their own websites as well (see the listing below).
Meeting Points
The official website (isite.nz) in English and Chinese has a list and finder for all the i-Sites in New Zealand. They often act as meeting points for tours and they are also a good place to share information with other travellers. A few are even tourist attractions in their own right!
The Department of Conservation (DOC) also runs a network of visitor centres, mainly in the country's National Parks.
Over 3 million overseas tourists normally visit New Zealand every year with the majority from Australia, followed by China and the USA. Tourism New Zealand's YouTube channel (100% Pure New Zealand) and its Instagram account (instagram.com/purenewzealand) should both be part of your pre-departure preparation and a visit to i-Site when you arrive at your destination.
