Huka Falls, Waikato River
Huka Falls on the Waikato River, North Island, New Zealand. |
Huka Falls is near the town of Taupo on the Waikato River. The river is the longest in New Zealand and known for its white-water rafting.
The falls are one of the most visited natural attractions in the country.
In the Maori language "huka" means foam which is appropriate, as the river gushes 20 metres down through a narrow 20-meter wide gorge.
The force of the water is incredible. 220,000 litres of water per second, in fact, pours down the waterfall. The super blue colour comes from the clarity of the water reflecting blue light.
The volume of water would fill an Olympic swimming pool in 11 seconds |
Access - Getting There
The car park for the falls is about 1.6 km north of Taupō. A sightseeing bus passes on a circuit several times a day.
